Bird census reveals rising species count in Odisha’s wetlands

Bhubaneswar, Jan 19: Over 15 lakh birds from more than 200 species were recorded during the mid-winter bird census conducted across various wetlands in Odisha.
The Odisha State Wildlife Organisation announced on Sunday that the census was carried out with meticulous planning, dividing each wetland into designated sectors to ensure thorough coverage.
The survey involved over 200 participants, including forest officials, ornithologists, researchers, and trained volunteers. Using spotting scopes, binoculars, and data sheets, the team ensured accurate identification and counting of the bird species.
According to the report, Chilika Lake and Mangalajodi wetlands recorded 11,27,228 birds from 196 species, showing an increase of nine species compared to last year. This included 10,87,226 migratory birds from 109 species and 40,002 resident birds belonging to 87 species. In the Nalabana Sanctuary, 3,43,226 birds from 92 species were documented.
In the Hirakud reservoir in Sambalpur, 3,77,732 birds from 122 species were sighted. The reservoir was divided into 21 sectors, with 32 teams and 70 participants conducting the survey.
Meanwhile, Bhitarkanika National Park recorded 1,51,614 birds from 118 species. Among them, the Lesser Whistling Duck (44,825) and Northern Pintail (18,776) were the most abundant species, as per the census report.
