IMD issues week-long rainfall alert for Odisha, depression likely over Bay of Bengal

Bhubaneswar, Sept 22: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a seven-day weather alert for Odisha, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and the possible development of a depression in the Bay of Bengal later this week.
According to the latest bulletin from the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, a low-pressure area lies over the northeast Bay of Bengal and is expected to shift towards the northwest Bay within 24 hours. In addition, another low-pressure system is likely to form around September 25, which could strengthen into a depression by September 26. The system is projected to cross the coasts of South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh on September 27.
To prepare for the impact, the IMD has issued colour-coded warnings across all 30 districts. On Day 1 and 2, Orange Alerts are in place for Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, and Sambalpur, while Yellow Alerts cover most other districts. From Day 3 to 5, Koraput and Malkangiri are under Orange Alerts, and by Day 6 and 7, warnings are likely to reduce to Yellow for western Odisha.
Possible risks include crop damage, flooding, waterlogging, road blockages, and landslides. Citizens have been urged to remain indoors during heavy rain, avoid sheltering under trees, and stay prepared for emergency relocation if required.
