Devastated by crop damage, Odisha farmer succumbs to heart attack

Bhubaneswar, Jan 6: Struggling under the weight of significant crop losses due to unseasonal rains, another farmer in Odisha tragically took his own life on Sunday. I

ndrajit Chatoi, a 48-year-old farmer from the Niali block in Cuttack district, suffered a fatal heart attack after discovering extensive damage to his ready-to-harvest paddy crop. This incident follows the recent death of another farmer, Kailash Pradhan, aged 75, who also succumbed to a heart attack linked to crop loss.

On the day of his death, Indrajit visited his fields and was devastated by the sight of his ruined crops. Consumed by anxiety over how he would provide for his family, he returned home, had dinner, and went to sleep. Unfortunately, he did not awaken the next morning, prompting his family to rush him to a nearby medical facility, where he was pronounced dead.

These incidents highlight the ongoing distress faced by farmers in Odisha, exacerbated by environmental challenges and financial pressures, raising concerns about mental health and the need for better support systems in rural areas.
