BMC enforces ban on obscene dance performances during Khandagiri Mela

Bhubaneswar, Feb 3: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to enforce a strict prohibition on inappropriate dance performances in Jatra (opera) shows during the upcoming Khandagiri Mela in Odisha's capital.

Commissioner Rajesh Prabhakar Patil emphasized to reporters that he has instructed the owners of jatra troupes to avoid any obscene dance routines throughout the Khandagiri Mela, which kicks off on Tuesday. He stressed the importance of maintaining the dignity of the historic Khandagiri and the Kumbh Mela, warning that any violations would lead to severe consequences.

Patil expressed confidence that the jatra and opera shows would adhere to the established guidelines, as the troupe owners are already familiar with them.

The Khandagiri Mela, also known as Magha Mela or Khandagiri Kumbh Mela, is a significant religious fair organized by the BMC each year during the Odia calendar month of Magha, drawing thousands of devotees, pilgrims, and tourists.

In addition to religious rituals, the fair showcases Odisha's rich cultural heritage through spiritual talks, folk performances, handicraft exhibitions, and a lively marketplace.

Set to run from February 5 to February 12, the Khandagiri Mela 2025 has been the focus of thorough preparations, with the Commissioner highlighting priorities such as sustainable lighting and accessible drinking water for attendees.
