Onion prices soar to Rs 50/kg amid supply shortages

Bhubaneswar, Aug 20: The price of onions in the city has surged dramatically, putting a strain on consumers. While potatoes are priced at Rs 40 per kilogram, onions have jumped to Rs 50 per kilogram.
Sources indicate that the price of onions has spiked significantly from Rs 35 per kilogram just a few days ago, now increasing by Rs 10-15 per kilogram. This rise is attributed to a shortage in supply, especially since onions are imported from other states. A trader explained, “The price of onions has gone up due to a supply shortage from Nasik. If the supply situation does not improve, prices could rise further.”
The trader also warned that the situation might deteriorate if the supply issues persist, potentially leading to even higher prices. “Consumers should prepare for possible additional increases in onion prices, which will further strain their budgets,” he added.
The steep price hike is adding to the financial pressure on consumers who are already struggling with high costs for other essential goods. A homemaker expressed frustration, stating, “Managing household expenses is becoming increasingly difficult with the rising costs of onions and potatoes.”
