Odisha follows strict protocols for HMPV prevention

Bhubaneswar, Jan 7: Following the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections in certain states, the Odisha government assured the public on Tuesday that there is no need for panic, as no cases of the virus have been reported in the state so far.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling stated that the department is fully prepared to handle any potential situation related to HMPV. “There is no reason for alarm, as no individual in Odisha has been infected with HMPV to date,” he told reporters.

Mahaling emphasized that the state will strictly follow the guidelines and standard operating procedures issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to prevent the spread of the virus. He added that the situation in India remains under control, with only a few cases reported in three or four locations across the country.

The minister highlighted that discussions have already been held with medical colleges across Odisha, and specialized teams of doctors are ready to provide treatment if needed. Any developments related to HMPV will be jointly managed by the state and central governments, he said.

Mahaling advised people experiencing symptoms such as cough, cold, or fever to seek immediate medical attention. He also assured that the government is equipped to conduct sample testing, although the current situation in Odisha does not warrant significant concern.

Earlier in the day, the Health Department convened a meeting at the Loka Seva Bhavan in Bhubaneswar to discuss the HMPV cases detected in other parts of the country. The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Health Secretary, Director of Health Services, Director of Public Health, and other department representatives.
