Odisha CM promises action after assault on Army officer and fiancée

Bhubaneswar, Sept 20: In response to rising criticism from opposition parties regarding the alleged assault of Major Gurvansh Singh, an officer in the Indian Army's Sikh Regiment, and the sexual harassment of his fiancée at Bharatpur Police Station, the Odisha government has pledged decisive action.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi addressed the media on Friday, stating that the government has ordered a Crime Branch investigation into the incident. He confirmed that the involved police personnel have been suspended, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against them.

The Chief Minister emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring strict measures against those responsible for the alleged misconduct. His remarks followed sharp criticisms from opposition leaders, including Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik, who expressed concern over the incident and questioned police conduct in the state. Patnaik called for a comprehensive judicial inquiry and swift action regarding the allegations of violence and harassment.
