No new liquor stores in Odisha: Minister announces major policy shift

Bhubaneswar, Aug 8: In a significant policy shift, Prithviraj Harichandan, the Minister of Law, Works, and Excise for the Government of Odisha, announced that no new liquor shops will be permitted in the state. This decision, revealed on Thursday, is part of a broader effort to overhaul and clarify the state’s excise policy.
Harichandan emphasized that the aim is to make the excise policy more transparent and effective. "By refining the excise policy, we will prevent the establishment of additional liquor shops in Odisha," he stated. This move is part of the government's ongoing initiative to curb illegal liquor sales, a challenge that Harichandan acknowledges as significant.
Looking ahead to 2025, Harichandan outlined that several changes to the excise policy are anticipated. The overarching goal is to eliminate both new liquor shops and illegal liquor sales within the state. The government’s commitment to these changes reflects a strong stance on regulating liquor distribution and combating illicit activities.
