New Delhi, Feb 21: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed deep sorrow over the alleged suicide of a Nepali student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha and the subsequent tensions involving students from Nepal.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated on Friday that the ministry is closely coordinating with the Odisha government and KIIT authorities regarding the incident. He emphasized that India prioritizes the safety and well-being of all international students.

“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate demise of the Nepali student and extend our heartfelt condolences. The Government of India is committed to ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all foreign students studying in the country,” Jaiswal said during a press briefing. He also mentioned that the MEA remains in constant communication with the Nepalese authorities.

Meanwhile, KIIT founder Achyuta Samanta issued a public apology to the families of Nepali students and urged those who had left the campus to return.

Expressing his sorrow, Samanta assured students that normalcy had been restored at the university, and academic activities were proceeding smoothly. “We have taken necessary action, and I personally feel saddened by the incident. I urge our Nepali students to rejoin their classes without fear. There will be no impact on academics, placements, or discipline,” he reassured.

He further appealed to the parents of Nepali students to trust the institution’s commitment to their safety and well-being, encouraging students to return soon.
