GM University Assistant Professor arrested for alleged sexual exploitation of student

Bhubaneswar, July 17: An Assistant Professor from GM University in Sambalpur has been arrested on charges of sexually exploiting a student under the false promise of marriage. The accused, Gopikant Suna, 32, serves in the Department of Education and was taken into custody after the survivor, a 20-year-old second-year BA-BEd student, lodged a formal complaint.

According to the complaint filed at Sambalpur Mahila Police Station on July 16 at 2:36 PM, Suna allegedly lured the student into a physical relationship by repeatedly assuring her of marriage.

However, he later withdrew from the commitment, leaving the student emotionally devastated. The victim alleged that the exploitation took place at Suna’s government residence in the Professor Colony near Budharaja. She currently resides in a rented house in the Angulalane area of Sambalpur.

Following her complaint, the police registered a case under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and arrested the accused. He was subsequently produced before the court.

The incident has sparked concern within the academic community, although GM University authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the matter.
