Fresh low-pressure over Bay of Bengal to bring heavy rains across Odisha, IMD issues yellow warning

Bhubaneswar, Sept 20: Odisha is bracing for a spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms over the next week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the east-central and adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal near the Myanmar–Bangladesh coasts around September 25. The system is likely to intensify and cause widespread rainfall in many parts of the state.
According to the IMD, while scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue in some districts until September 22, the intensity of rainfall is expected to increase significantly from September 23. A yellow warning has been issued for multiple districts across Odisha for the coming days.
In the next 24 hours, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 30–40 kmph may occur in districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
On September 21–22, yellow warnings remain for coastal and northern districts, while between September 23–24, heavy rain is particularly forecast for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert to possible waterlogging and local disruptions.
