‘Extra Odinari’ initiative aims to restore women’s dignity and equality
Bhubaneswar, Dec 22: A groundbreaking initiative called Extra Odinari (Extra ଓଡ଼ିନାରୀ) has been launched at the Safe Odisha For Her headquarters in Saheed Nagar, Bhubaneswar, with the goal of redefining leisure and restoring dignity for women in Odisha.
The project, conceived by feminist youth leader Sonali Priyadarsini, a participant in UN Women India’s Feminist Youth Leadership Program, aims to challenge societal norms and provide women with a secure and inclusive environment to relax, connect, and grow.
Supported by Safe Odisha For Her, an organization dedicated to uplifting women and gender minorities from marginalized communities, the initiative emphasizes leisure as a fundamental right rather than a privilege, offering women a space to foster personal development without guilt or judgment.
Speaking at the launch, Sonali Priyadarsini described the initiative as "a symbol of resistance and change," highlighting its role in creating a community where women’s voices are amplified, and their rights to leisure and equality are recognized. The facility, set to open in January 2025, will operate exclusively for women from Monday to Friday, while weekends will welcome everyone to encourage shared understanding and solidarity.
The launch event featured notable contributions from prominent figures such as Naisha Bhargabi, a renowned singer and multidisciplinary artist, who delivered a moving performance, and Rhea Resham Bari, a fashion model and advocate for tribal and women’s rights, who spoke passionately about breaking stereotypes and promoting inclusion.
As a pilot project under Safe Odisha For Her, Extra Odinari envisions expanding its reach across the state by creating similar safe spaces in other locations. The initiative aspires to dismantle systemic barriers, increase access to resources, and empower women to lead fulfilling lives. This marks a significant step towards a future where women in Odisha—and beyond—can reclaim their rights to leisure, equality, and dignity.
