Depression over Bay of Bengal to bring heavy rainfall to Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Aug 2: A depression has formed over the Southern Bay of Bengal, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Odisha. The regional meteorological center in Bhubaneswar anticipates that this cyclonic circulation may develop into a low-pressure system.
The meteorological office issued a rain alert for 21 districts in Odisha on Thursday. Specifically, an alert has been raised for Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Deogarh, and Bargarh due to the potential for heavy rain today. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue across the state for the next two days.
A yellow warning for heavy rain has been issued for 21 districts today. The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority has notified District Magistrates about the situation. There is concern that slum areas in cities may face flooding. To manage the potential waterlogging, pump arrangements have been made, and the government has been instructed to provide an immediate report on any damage caused. Rainfall is expected to diminish after August 3.
Since the start of the monsoon season on June 1, Odisha has recorded a total of 489.5 mm of rain, with 11 percent more expected to reach the state’s normal rainfall of 550.7 mm. Malkangiri district has received above-average rainfall, while three other districts have also recorded higher than normal rainfall. Fourteen districts have seen average rainfall, and twelve districts have experienced moderate rainfall.
