Death penalty for Bhubaneswar man who stabbed wife 33 times
Bhubaneswar, Aug 1: A Bhubaneswar court has sentenced Sanjit Dash to death for the brutal murder of his wife, Saraswati Dash. Sanjit was convicted of stabbing Saraswati 33 times with a kitchen knife in their Ghatikia home.
The Additional District Judge (ADJ-2) in Bhubaneswar handed down the death penalty, describing the case as one of the "rarest of rare" incidents. The sentence was based on the testimonies of 15 witnesses, along with scientific evidence, fingerprints, and other documents. The judge delivered the verdict after hearing poignant accounts from Sanjit's mother, daughter, and sister-in-law.
The crime, which occurred in June 2022, involved Sanjit attacking his wife Saraswati and their six-year-old daughter. The daughter sustained severe injuries and took three months to recover.
Sanjit, who was addicted to drugs and frequently quarreled with Saraswati, committed the murder after a heated argument on the night of June 22, 2022. Following the attack, he was apprehended by the Bharatpur police while wandering the Ghatikia area.
