Missing Bhubaneswar traffic constable found murdered, male friend confesses

Bhubaneswar, Sept 17: The mystery surrounding the disappearance of woman traffic constable Subhamitra Sahoo has taken a grim turn with police confirming that she was allegedly murdered by her lover, Deepak Rout, who also works with the Commissionerate Police.

Sources said Rout, a clerk at the Commissioner’s Office, was detained and interrogated, during which he confessed to strangling the 25-year-old officer following a dispute. After committing the crime, he reportedly transported her body in a car from Bhubaneswar and buried it in a forested area of Keonjhar district.

Police on Wednesday recovered a woman’s body near Ghatagaon in Keonjhar. While it is suspected to be that of Subhamitra, forensic and scientific teams have been roped in to confirm her identity. Her family, natives of Pichukuli in Khurda, has been informed.

Investigations revealed shocking details about Rout, who had earlier received Rs 1 crore insurance money following his wife’s death under mysterious circumstances. Though suspected of foul play, he had claimed it was an accident.

Meanwhile, police have seized the vehicle used in the crime, recovered CCTV and toll gate footage, and dispatched a special squad to Keonjhar. The case has sent shockwaves through the state police establishment.
