IMD forecasts unsettled weather in Odisha; yellow warning issued for several districts

Bhubaneswar, Oct 10: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bhubaneswar, has predicted a week of unsettled weather for Odisha, with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms expected across several districts. The State is under a ‘Yellow’ level weather warning for the next three days, advising residents to remain alert to localized severe weather.

According to the midday bulletin on Friday, synoptic conditions favour the gradual withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from many parts of the country over the next 3–4 days. However, Odisha will experience convective activity during this transition period.

For Friday (Day 1), heavy rain with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) is forecast for Koraput and Malkangiri, while thunderstorms without heavy rain are expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, and Mayurbhanj. On Saturday (Day 2), the warning shifts to southern districts such as Kalahandi, Rayagada, and Koraput, with thunderstorms in over 15 districts. By Sunday (Day 3), heavy rain is likely to ease, but thunderstorms with gusty winds will continue in most districts.

From Day 4 onwards, weather activity is expected to reduce, remaining confined to southern coastal and interior districts, with no warnings issued. Recent rainfall included 6 cm at Kotpad (Koraput) and 4 cm each at Barmul (Nayagarh) and Bijepur (Bargarh). Temperatures varied, with Jharsuguda and Sambalpur at 34°C and Phulbani at 19°C.

For Bhubaneswar, a partly cloudy sky with chances of rain or thunderstorm is forecast over the next 24 hours. Fishermen along the Odisha coast are not under any warning for the next five days.
