Sarojini Sahoo honored with 45th Sarala Puraskar for literary excellence

Bhubaneswar, Oct 30: Renowned author Dr. Sarojini Sahoo was honored with the prestigious 45th Sarala Puraskar, awarded by the Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT), recognizing outstanding contributions in literature. The award, which includes a copper plaque and a cash prize of seven lakh rupees, was presented to Dr. Sahoo by distinguished poet and writer Devdas Chhotray for her acclaimed novel Asthira Pada.
Additionally, celebrated sculptor Shri Sudarshan Sahoo and famed playback singer Tansen Singh were bestowed the ‘Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman,’ each receiving a citation plaque and a prize of two lakh fifty thousand rupees.
At the event, IMPaCT Trustee Paramita Panda emphasized the trust's commitment to ensuring financial constraints do not hinder artistic creativity, with the three-tiered judging process for the Sarala Puraskar prioritizing “Primary Recommendations” for transparency and inclusivity. The award, established by Dr. Bansidhar Panda and Ila Panda, supports the development and prominence of Odia language and literature.
Reflecting on the occasion, Chief Guest Devdas Chhotray recounted a touching story of how his father, the playwright Gopal Chhotray, received the Sarala Puraskar in 2000. Unable to attend the ceremony, the family was honored by Ila Panda and Dr. Bansidhar Panda, who personally presented the award at their home—a rare gesture of humility and respect. He also shared his belief that fiction unites readers beyond its boundaries, with writers bridging this connection through their stories.
Winner Sarojini Sahoo expressed feeling a renewed sense of connection, sharing that the award reignited memories of her younger years and described it as a “wonderful awakening.”
The event attracted writers and literature enthusiasts from across the state, contributing to its resounding success. Founded in 1974, IMPaCT has been dedicated to promoting Odia arts and literature through awards such as the Sarala Puraskar (instituted in 1980), the Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman, and the Ekalabya Puraskar.
