Odisha's first interstitial implant brachytherapy successfully performed at SUMUM

Bhubaneswar, Oct 10: SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) in Odisha has introduced Interstitial Implant Brachytherapy, a cutting-edge treatment for breast cancer. This advanced form of internal radiation involves placing small radioactive sources directly in the tumor area during surgery.
Breast cancer, the most common cancer among women, is typically treated with surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and radiation. According to Dr. Chira Ranjan Khadanga, Senior Consultant in Radiation Oncology at SUMUM, radiotherapy has been a standard cancer treatment for over a century. However, Interstitial Brachytherapy significantly reduces treatment time, allowing patients to receive radiation within 5 to 10 days post-surgery, compared to the usual 4-6 weeks.
Dr. Khadanga reported that the first successful brachytherapy procedure in Odisha was performed at SUMUM on a 60-year-old woman with early-stage breast cancer. After surgically removing the tumor, a flexible catheter was implanted for five days of radiation therapy. The patient fully recovered and was discharged within 10 days.
SUMUM's specialized equipment and skilled staff make this precise, less invasive treatment a crucial option for breast cancer patients.
