Odisha Manaska’s 10th edition explores Odia identity through cinema

Bhubaneswar, May 19: The 10th edition of Odisha Manaska, a monthly discussion forum organized by All Things Odisha, was held on May 18 at the ExtraOdinari space in Saheed Nagar, Bhubaneswar. This month’s theme, “Who Are We on Screen? Shaping and Reflecting the Evolving Odia Identity Through Film,” sparked a heartfelt and engaging discussion around cinema and identity.
Renowned Odia film journalist, historian, and National Award-winning writer Surya Deo, along with indie filmmaker and producer Swastik Choudhury, led the session. The discussion attracted around 20 participants from diverse backgrounds, all with a shared interest in cinema and its impact on cultural identity.
Participants examined how Odia cinema portrays Odisha’s cultural evolution, regional diversity, and societal changes. Surya Deo emphasized that while Odia identity is evolving, its core remains rooted. He expressed concern over the trend of remakes in Odia films, which he believes has diluted authentic storytelling and stifled experimentation.
Swastik Choudhury highlighted the need to create globally appealing Odia films that still retain local cultural elements. He stressed that limited resources shouldn’t hinder creativity.
The forum also reflected on the lack of accessibility to quality cinema in Odisha, calling for a better ecosystem to support both filmmakers and film enthusiasts.
Odisha Manaska continues to serve as a democratic, inclusive platform fostering intellectual discourse on Odisha’s cultural, social, and historical issues.
