BJP leader and former minister Samir Dey passes away
Bhubaneswar, Nov 18: Senior BJP leader and former minister Samir Dey passed away on Monday while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack. He was 67 years old.
Dey had been admitted to the hospital in Cuttack's CDA area on November 1 after his health worsened. Sources reported that he had been battling pneumonia along with other health issues. Dr. Sampad Das, who was overseeing his treatment, stated that Dey had been in the ICU on ventilator support due to complications from a weakened immune system and severe lung damage. Despite efforts, Dey suffered a cardiac arrest caused by multiple organ failure.
Samir Dey had a notable political career, having served as Odisha's Minister of Higher Education from 2004 to 2009 and as Minister of Urban Development from 2000 to 2004. He was elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly three times, representing Cuttack City in 1995, 2000, and 2004.
Following his passing, condolences poured in from across the state. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi expressed deep sorrow, stating that Dey would be given full state honors for his last rites. Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida also paid tribute to Dey, recalling his active role in the Ram Janma Bhoomi Andolan and his impactful service to the people of Cuttack and Odisha.
