Mayurbhanj schools closed on September 14 due to heavy rainfall forecast

Bhubaneswar, Sept 13: Due to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast of heavy rainfall, the Mayurbhanj Collector has announced the closure of all schools in the district for September 14, 2024.

In a statement issued by the district education officer (DEO), it was confirmed that both public and private schools will be closed on that date. "As directed by the Collector and District Magistrate of Mayurbhanj, all schools, including private institutions, will remain shut on September 14, 2024, due to the anticipated heavy rainfall and associated weather warnings," the DEO's notice stated.

The IMD has issued a red alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall (ranging from 7 to 20 cm), with some areas potentially experiencing extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm. The alert also includes warnings of thunderstorms and lightning in certain parts of Mayurbhanj.

The IMD has cautioned about potential flash floods, waterlogging in low-lying areas, inundation of agricultural fields, and mudslides or landslides in vulnerable hilly regions due to the expected heavy rainfall. Additionally, there may be damage to informal or kutcha roads, collapses of vulnerable kutcha houses, and waterlogging in underpass roads, which could lead to traffic congestion in urban areas.
