Cyclone likely to form over south Bay; no impact predicted for Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Nov 25: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the Comorin region and southwest Bay of Bengal, even as another weather system near the Strait of Malacca continues to intensify and is likely to develop into a cyclonic storm by November 27. The simultaneous activity of these two systems has drawn significant attention from meteorologists tracking developments over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the IMD’s morning bulletin, an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area contributed to the formation of a new low-pressure zone near Sri Lanka at around 5:30 am today. This system is expected to strengthen further during the next 24 hours as it moves northwestward.

Meanwhile, the well-marked low-pressure area over the Strait of Malacca and adjoining south Andaman Sea is set to intensify into a depression today and gradually strengthen into a cyclonic storm over the South Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on November 28.

Despite the intensification of these systems, the IMD has issued no warnings for Odisha. The potential cyclone is not expected to affect the state’s weather conditions, offering relief to residents concerned about possible impacts.
