Cuttack Heritage Walks celebrates the legacy of century-old Kalinga Gymnasium

Bhubaneswar, Oct 28: Cuttack, the historic heart of Odisha, has long stood as a symbol of the state’s rich heritage, culture, and social harmony. From the banks of the Mahanadi, where civilization in Kalinga once flourished, the city continues to thrive as a vibrant center of tradition and progress. Known for landmarks such as SCB Medical College, Ravenshaw College, Orissa High Court, Barabati Stadium, and festivals like Bali Yatra and Dussehra, Cuttack embodies the spirit of brotherhood and cultural pride.

Adding to this legacy is the century-old Kalinga Gymnasium (Kalinga Bayamshala), located near Shaheed Bhawan in Chaudhuri Bazaar. In its 77th edition, the Cuttack Heritage Walks recently visited this iconic institution, which has played a crucial role in promoting physical fitness and traditional martial arts. Established in 1920 by Padma Charan Ray, the gymnasium initially operated in Kazi Bazaar before shifting to Nimchouri and later to its current site in 1943, following land allotment by the British administration.

Odia leaders like Harekrushna Mahatab and Nabakrushna Chaudhuri further strengthened its growth, forming a committee for its effective management. Under later leaders such as Fakir Charan Mohanty and Akshay Panda, Kalinga Gymnasium gained national fame, nurturing renowned wrestlers, bodybuilders, and weightlifters.

The recent heritage walk, facilitated by Dr. Dipak Samantarai, highlighted the gym’s century-long contribution to a healthy and united society. Senior members including Jayant Singh, Biswaranjan Dehuri, Kishore Bit, Hitesh Seth, Jitendra Singh, Aditya Prasad Ghosh, Lalit Mohan Panda, and Amar Prasad Patra.
