Bhubaneswar Airport set for major expansion with new terminal approval
Bhubaneswar, Oct 4: The Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar is poised for significant expansion with the addition of a new terminal to cater to the growing needs of domestic and international travelers.
During a review meeting in Bhubaneswar on Friday, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu announced that BPIA is expected to receive approval for the new terminal within a month, with construction projected to finish within two years.
Naidu expressed his enthusiasm about the developments in Odisha, stating, “I had a productive discussion with the Airports Authority of India and various officials. The Bhubaneswar airport has seen remarkable growth, connecting to 20 cities across India and four international destinations. With a supportive government at both the central and state levels, we are committed to advancing civil aviation in the region.”
Currently, Terminal 1 of BPIA is designed to accommodate approximately 4 million passengers annually but has already exceeded that capacity, servicing around 5 million travelers. To meet demand, Naidu emphasized the necessity of expanding capacity to 8 million passengers per year. He indicated that the new terminal will enhance passenger experience significantly.
Additionally, Naidu mentioned that several minor projects, including the expansion of facilities and improvements to passenger amenities, are already in progress and are expected to be completed within a month. The airport’s existing Instrument Landing System (ILS) will also be upgraded from CAT I to CAT II within this timeframe.
