Justice Sanjiv Khanna appointed as next Chief Justice of India
New Delhi, Oct 24: The Union Government has officially announced the appointment of Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the next Chief Justice of India.
Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Union Minister for Law and Justice, stated, "In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the Hon'ble President, after consulting with the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as Chief Justice of India effective November 11, 2024." Justice Khanna will take on the role as the 51st Chief Justice of India, serving a term of nearly seven months until May 13, 2025.
The outgoing Chief Justice DY Chandrachud recommended Justice Khanna's name to the Centre, recognizing him as the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court. Justice Khanna was appointed to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court on January 18, 2019, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished legal career.
