Cold wave to grip Odisha for four days as temperatures dip sharply
Bhubaneswar, Nov 17: A severe cold wave is set to sweep across Odisha over the next four days, with temperatures expected to fall below 12°C in more than 10 locations. The capital city, Bhubaneswar, is also bracing for a further drop in mercury levels, signalling a noticeably colder winter for residents this year.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cold wave will be more intense across the northern and interior districts. Kandhamal continues to remain the coldest region, with G. Udayagiri recording an icy 5.4°C — the lowest temperature in the state so far.
Temperatures have plunged across several parts of Odisha, with Semiliguda registering 7.4°C and a total of 13 cities reporting minimum temperatures below 12°C. Other regions experiencing a sharp fall include Daringbadi (7°C), Phulbani (8°C), Rourkela (10.2°C), Jharsuguda (10.6°C), Angul (10.6°C), Keonjhar (10.8°C), Chipilima (11°C), Kirei (11.3°C), Bhawanipatna (11.4°C), Koraput (11.5°C), and Nabarangapur (11.6°C).
The twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar are also witnessing the season’s chilliest spell, with temperatures dropping to 13.6°C and 12.9°C respectively. Bhubaneswar’s temperature has plunged by 3°C in just two days, now standing 6.4°C below normal, while Cuttack is 5.1°C below normal.
The IMD has predicted that the cold wave will persist across these regions for the next four days, with only a slight rise of 2–3°C expected afterward. Residents are advised to prepare for continued chilly nights and early mornings.
