Bhubaneswar, Aug 4: In a landmark recognition of Odisha’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage, the sacred wheels of the three chariots used during the world-famous Rath Yatra in Puri will soon be installed at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The initiative has received the approval of President Droupadi Murmu following a proposal submitted by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA).
SJTA Chief Administrator Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee met President Murmu at Lok Bhavan in Bhubaneswar on Monday and formally presented the proposal. The President welcomed the initiative and agreed to display the ceremonial chariot wheels at the presidential estate as a tribute to the centuries-old Jagannath tradition and Odisha’s timeless spiritual legacy.
The wheels belong to the three iconic chariots used during the annual Rath Yatra—Nandighosh of Lord Jagannath, Taladhwaja of Lord Balabhadra and Darpadalan of Goddess Subhadra. Every year, these magnificent wooden chariots are constructed afresh by skilled artisans following centuries-old traditions and strict religious rituals before the grand festival begins.
The ceremonial wheels will be transported from Puri to Rashtrapati Bhavan, where they are expected to be installed prominently as enduring symbols of Odisha’s cultural identity and India’s vibrant spiritual heritage. Their presence at the presidential estate will introduce countless visitors from India and abroad to the significance of the Jagannath tradition.
The move is being viewed as a matter of immense pride for Odisha, highlighting the global recognition of the state’s ancient traditions and reinforcing the cultural importance of the Rath Yatra, one of the world’s largest and most celebrated religious festivals. The installation is also expected to strengthen awareness of Odisha’s unique heritage at the national level.
