Bhubaneswar, Aug 4: Several parts of western Odisha witnessed intense monsoon activity during the last 24 hours, with Jharsuguda district recording the highest rainfall in the state, according to the latest data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The widespread showers brought significant rainfall to several districts, reflecting the continued influence of active monsoon conditions over Odisha.
The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre stated that Jharsuguda received 114.3 mm of rainfall, making it the wettest location in the state. It was closely followed by Chikiti in Ganjam district with 111.4 mm, while Betanati in Mayurbhanj recorded 93.0 mm of rainfall.
Several other areas also experienced heavy downpours. Bamra in Sambalpur received 91.0 mm, Jhumpura in Keonjhar recorded 85.4 mm, and Koshagumuda in Nabarangpur received 83.6 mm of rainfall. Overall, 10 weather stations across Odisha reported heavy rainfall during the period.
Despite the localized heavy showers, the state’s average rainfall during the past 24 hours stood at 12.0 mm, compared to the normal 14.4 mm, registering a 16 per cent deficit. The figures indicate that while several districts received intense rainfall, the overall precipitation across the state remained below the seasonal average.
On the temperature front, Paralakhemundi recorded the highest maximum temperature at 36.2°C, while Boudh registered the lowest minimum temperature at 19.5°C. In the capital city, Bhubaneswar received 38.1 mm of rainfall, with temperatures ranging between 25.0°C and 34.6°C. Cuttack recorded 14.2 mm of rainfall, with the maximum temperature touching 35.2°C and the minimum settling at 23.4°C.
The IMD is closely monitoring the evolving weather system and has advised residents to remain alert, particularly in areas prone to heavy rainfall and waterlogging.
