Bhubaneswar, May 25: The intense heatwave sweeping across Odisha is likely to continue for another four to five days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned, urging people to remain cautious amid rising temperatures and humidity levels.
According to the latest IMD forecast, western Odisha districts including Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Balangir are expected to record maximum temperatures between 43°C and 45°C along with dry north-westerly winds. The severe heat conditions are likely to prevail till May 28.
On Sunday, nearly 20 places across the state recorded temperatures above 40°C. Western Odisha remained the worst affected, with six locations crossing the 45°C mark. Titlagarh emerged as the hottest place in the state at 45.8°C, followed by Boudh at 45.6°C, Bhawanipatna at 45.4°C, Sambalpur at 45.3°C, Sonepur at 45.2°C and Balangir at 45°C.
Though coastal cities such as Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri recorded temperatures below 40°C, residents are facing severe discomfort due to high humidity caused by moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal. The “real feel” temperature in several places is touching 45–50°C.
The IMD has advised people to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
