Bhubaneswar, April 16: The Odisha government will take a decision on declaring summer vacation in schools on a district-wise basis after receiving detailed reports from District Collectors, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond said on Thursday.
With temperatures rising sharply across the state, the minister emphasised that student safety remains the top priority. He noted that the department is closely monitoring the heatwave situation, particularly in western Odisha where conditions have turned severe.
“The decision on school closures will be taken only after receiving ground-level inputs from the respective district collectors,” Gond said, adding that the government is avoiding a blanket order and instead opting for a targeted approach based on local conditions.
Collectors in affected districts have been directed to submit detailed assessments on weather conditions and their impact on students. Meanwhile, the Special Relief Commissioner is scheduled to hold a review meeting on the heatwave.
A final decision on advancing summer vacation or temporarily shutting schools will be taken after this review and thorough evaluation. According to the India Meteorological Department, Titilagarh recorded the highest temperature at 42°C.
