Bhubaneswar, Aug 20: The Department of Psychiatry at IMS and SUM Hospital-2, Phulnakhara, has launched Modified Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) services, marking a significant step towards strengthening advanced mental healthcare facilities in the region.
The new service became operational with the successful administration of the hospital’s first Modified ECT procedure on a patient diagnosed with schizophrenia, hospital sources said.
Dr. Bhabani Shankar, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, expressed satisfaction over the introduction of the specialised treatment facility. He said Modified ECT is an important and highly effective treatment option for patients suffering from severe and acute psychiatric conditions, particularly those requiring rapid clinical intervention.
Unlike conventional ECT, the modified procedure is conducted under general anaesthesia and muscle relaxation, which enhances patient safety and comfort during treatment. Dr. Shankar said the successful introduction of the service was made possible through close coordination and teamwork between the Departments of Psychiatry and Anaesthesia.
He expressed gratitude to Medical Superintendent Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Kumar Lenka and Dean Prof. (Dr.) Snigdha Prava Mishra for their continued support, guidance and leadership in establishing the facility.
Dr. Lagnajit Dash, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, said the unit is now fully equipped and operational. He added that the facility would enable the hospital to provide timely, specialised care to patients with severe mental health disorders and support better recovery outcomes.
