Bhubaneswar, Aug 6: Widespread monsoon showers lashed several coastal districts of Odisha over the past 24 hours, with Bhubaneswar recording the highest rainfall of 107.9 mm till 8.30 am on Thursday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The intense spell brought much-needed relief from the prevailing humid weather while raising concerns over waterlogging in low-lying areas.
IMD data showed that Jenapur in Jajpur district received 106.8 mm of rainfall, closely followed by Patamundai in Kendrapada district with 100 mm. The heavy rainfall reflected the continued influence of active monsoon conditions over the coastal region.
Several locations in Cuttack district also experienced substantial rainfall. Mahanga recorded 92 mm, while Nischintakoili received 82 mm, Kantapada logged 81 mm, and Salipur recorded 65 mm. In Bhadrak district, Bhandaripokhari registered 80 mm of rainfall.
Other areas reporting heavy precipitation included Sukinda (76 mm), Jajpur town (75 mm), Bari (65 mm), Rajghat in Balasore (74.8 mm), Bhogorai (68 mm), NH-5 Govindpur (66.2 mm), Biridi in Jagatsinghpur (72 mm), and Aul in Kendrapada (66 mm).
The continuous rainfall has replenished water bodies and brought down daytime temperatures across much of coastal Odisha. However, civic authorities have warned that persistent showers could lead to waterlogging, traffic congestion, and localized flooding in vulnerable urban and low-lying areas. Residents have been advised to exercise caution while travelling, avoid inundated roads, and stay updated on weather advisories issued by the IMD and local administration as the monsoon remains active across the state.
