Bhubaneswar, May 2: In a major awareness initiative, Balangir district police on Friday organised a large-scale bike rally to combat labour trafficking and prevent workers from falling into bonded labour. The rally, held as part of International Labour Day, was led by Superintendent of Police Abilash G and saw participation from around 300 police personnel.
The rally covered key areas including Balangir town and vulnerable blocks such as Khaprakhol, Belpada, Bongomunda, Kantabanji, and Lathor. Personnel from the Odisha Special Striking Force, Odisha Police, bonded labour survivors, and Labour Department officials joined the rally.
Through public announcements and direct interaction, officials cautioned residents against falling prey to middlemen offering advance payments and fake job promises. Police highlighted that such deceptive practices often lead to exploitation, restricted movement, and abuse.
Citizens were urged to verify job offers before migrating and report suspicious recruitment activities. Authorities reiterated that strict action is being taken against traffickers, with intensified surveillance and preventive measures in place.
SP Abilash G stressed the importance of community participation, urging youth and local leaders to act as vigilant partners in tackling trafficking.
Data shows that between 2020 and 2025, over 400 cases were registered and more than 4,200 workers rescued in the district. High-risk blocks are now under focused monitoring, with stronger enforcement and inter-state coordination underway.
