Bhubaneswar, May 22: The Department of Pathology at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, faculty of medical sciences under SOA Deemed to be University, has installed an advanced Philips Pathology Scanner SG 300 to strengthen diagnostic and research capabilities.
The state-of-the-art scanner, unveiled on Friday, can scan up to 60 pathology slides per hour and is expected to significantly improve the speed and accuracy of diagnosing complicated and ambiguous medical cases.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Debahuti Mohapatra, Head of the Department of Pathology, said the scanner would help preserve pathology slides in digital software format, reducing dependence on traditional glass slides for reporting and referral purposes. She said the technology would also be highly useful in patient follow-up and case documentation.
Prof. Mohapatra added that the equipment would facilitate teleconferences with reputed medical centres across the country, helping doctors avoid diagnostic errors in difficult cases. She noted that the scanner has a storage facility for five years and that it is the first such installation in a medical institution in Odisha and only the second hospital in the country to acquire the advanced equipment.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda said the scanner would ensure faster diagnosis, better record maintenance and improved quality in teaching, seminars and research activities.
Dean Prof. (Dr.) Sanghamitra Mishra and Medical Superintendent Prof. (Dr.) Pushparaj Samantasinghar said the technology would enhance patient care, research and training for postgraduate students.
