Bhubaneswar, May 22: Amid scorching temperatures and unbearable humidity across Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the possible formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, raising hopes of relief from the prolonged heatwave conditions prevailing in the state.
According to the latest weather prediction issued by the IMD, there is a 91 to 97 per cent probability of cyclogenesis over the North Indian Ocean during the next two weeks. Meteorologists have indicated that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the central Bay of Bengal around May 28 and 29.
Officials said favourable atmospheric conditions, including the active Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) phase along with other supporting weather systems over the sea region, are expected to aid the development of the low-pressure system.
Once formed, the weather system is likely to move in a north-westward direction, which may trigger widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several districts of Odisha. Coastal and interior regions are expected to witness cloudy skies and intermittent showers if the system intensifies further.
The anticipated weather activity is expected to provide much-needed respite to people suffering from intense summer heat and humidity over the past several days. Increased cloud cover and rainfall are likely to reduce daytime temperatures and improve overall weather conditions across the state.
The IMD is closely monitoring the evolving weather pattern and further updates are expected in the coming days.
