Bhubaneswar, Jan 21: In a major milestone for healthcare in south Odisha, doctors at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital–III in Sitalapalli, Berhampur, have successfully performed a highly complex neurosurgical procedure to remove a life-threatening brain tumor from a 50-year-old woman. This is the first time such an advanced neurosurgical technique has been carried out in the region, significantly strengthening local super-specialty medical care.
The patient, Hiramani Sahoo, was admitted with complaints of severe headache and sudden weakness in her left arm and leg. An MRI scan revealed a large intraventricular tumor on the right side of her brain, located deep within the ventricular system, making the surgery extremely challenging and high-risk.
Despite the complexity, the neurosurgery team achieved a near-total excision of the tumor using advanced technology, including a high-precision surgical microscope and CUSA (Cavitron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator), which allows selective removal of tumor tissue while protecting healthy brain structures.
The surgery was led by Dr. Pravat Kumar Jagadev with neuro-anaesthesia support from Dr. Pratyush K. Mishra. Hospital Director Deba Prasad Dash congratulated the team, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to providing metro-level healthcare locally. The patient is stable and recovering well under medical supervision.
