Bhubaneswar, July 15: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Warning for parts of Odisha on July 16, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy showers under the influence of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. The weather agency has predicted that widespread rainfall activity will continue across the state until July 20, prompting authorities to remain on alert.
According to the IMD’s midday bulletin, Jagatsinghpur and Puri districts are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at several places, with extremely heavy rainfall likely at one or two locations.
An Orange Warning has been issued for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Kandhamal, Khurda, Nayagarh and Ganjam, where heavy to very heavy rain is likely. Meanwhile, Balasore, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Rayagada and Gajapati have been placed under a Yellow Warning for heavy rainfall.
The wet spell is expected to continue on July 17, with Orange Alerts for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. Several other districts, including Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Puri and Khurda, will remain under Yellow Warning.
On July 18, Sambalpur and Angul are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall under an Orange Warning, while ten other districts will continue to experience heavy showers.
Although rainfall intensity is expected to decrease from July 19, isolated heavy rain is still likely in parts of northern Odisha. The IMD has advised residents, particularly those in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to remain cautious, as continuous rainfall could lead to waterlogging, localized flooding and disruption of road traffic and normal life.
