Bhubaneswar, April 27: Jharsuguda recorded a blistering 41.4°C at 11:30 AM on Monday, emerging as the hottest place in Odisha, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The sharp rise in temperature by mid-morning signals an intensifying heatwave, particularly across western and interior parts of the state.
Several districts witnessed soaring mercury levels, with Rourkela recording 39.8°C, followed by Sambalpur at 39.2°C and Hirakud at 38.6°C. Other regions also experienced intense heat, including Keonjhar at 37.6°C, Chandbali at 36.4°C, Balasore at 35.8°C, and the capital Bhubaneswar at 35.6°C.
In contrast, coastal areas remained relatively cooler due to sea influence. Puri recorded 32°C, while Paradip and Gopalpur registered 31.2°C and 30.8°C respectively.
The IMD has classified temperatures above 40°C as “extreme heat,” 38–40°C as “severe heat,” and 35–38°C as “intense heat.” The early onset of such high temperatures has raised concerns about public health, particularly for children, the elderly, and those working outdoors.
Issuing a precautionary advisory, the IMD has urged people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight between 11 AM and 4 PM, and wear light, loose-fitting clothing to minimize heat-related risks.
