Bhubaneswar, June 22: The Southwest Monsoon made further advances into Odisha on Monday, bringing widespread rainfall and improving prospects for its complete coverage across the state within the next 48 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said weather conditions remain highly favourable for the monsoon to progress into the remaining parts of Odisha over the next two days.
According to the Midday Weather Bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, the monsoon has extended into more areas of Odisha as well as parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. The northern limit of the monsoon currently passes through Balangir and Sundargarh districts.
Several parts of the state witnessed light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers during the past 24 hours. Sonepur district recorded heavy rainfall at isolated locations, with Sonepur and Dunguripalli receiving 7 cm of rain each.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers across most districts until June 24. A Yellow Warning has been issued for several districts, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty surface winds of 40-50 kmph and isolated heavy rainfall.
During the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Bargarh, Kandhamal, Rayagada and Koraput districts. Thunderstorm activity is also expected across coastal, western and southern Odisha.
For June 23 and 24, heavy rainfall is likely in Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri and Gajapati districts. The weather office has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea on June 22 and 23 as wind speeds may reach 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, making sea conditions rough to very rough along the Odisha coast.
