Bhubaneswar, Nov 7: A fresh firing incident rocked Odisha’s capital city on Friday, barely a day after a similar incident at Sisupalgarh, raising concerns over the law and order situation in Bhubaneswar. A youth was shot dead at point-blank range on the Bomikhal overbridge under Laxmisagar police station limits.
The deceased has been identified as Sonu Nayak, a resident of Haladipadia. The incident reportedly took place at around 3 PM, triggering panic in the area.
According to police sources, Sonu was travelling towards a petrol pump at Rasulgarh to refuel his vehicle along with four friends when unidentified miscreants intercepted them on the overbridge. The assailants allegedly opened fire at Sonu from close range, hitting him in the head. They fled the scene immediately after the attack.
Following the incident, Laxmisagar police rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. Two persons have reportedly been detained in connection with the shooting and are being questioned to ascertain their involvement.
Police teams have also launched raids at multiple locations to track down the attackers. Investigators are examining all possible angles, including the motive behind the murder and whether the incident was the result of an existing rivalry.
Taking serious note of the shooting, the Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner of Police visited the crime scene and reviewed the investigation. The Zonal Assistant Commissioner of Police and Special Squad officials are also involved in the probe.
