Bhubaneswar, May 13: Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi on Monday described nurses as “silent warriors” who remain beside human beings from birth till the last breath of life while addressing a programme organised on the occasion of International Nurses Day at Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital.
Speaking as the chief guest at the event organised by the hospital’s Nursing Department, Sarangi praised the tireless dedication of nurses during crises such as cyclones and the COVID-19 pandemic. She said nurses symbolize hope, compassion, and selfless service, making nursing one of the noblest professions in society.
Referring to Florence Nightingale, whose birth anniversary is observed globally as International Nurses Day, the MP said her life and dedication continue to inspire generations of nursing professionals and students.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” Sarangi stressed the importance of empowering nurses so they can deliver better healthcare services and save more lives. She urged them to continue serving society with empathy, dedication, and care.
The MP also lauded the healthcare services of IMS and SUM Hospital, stating that since 2005 the institution has emerged as a leading healthcare provider not only in Odisha but across the country.
Among others who addressed the programme were Lakshmipriya Mishra, Registrar of the Odisha Nurses and Midwives Registration Council, Prof. Prabhati Tripathy, Director of SUM Nursing College, and Prof. Pushparaj Samantsinghar, Medical Superintendent of IMS and SUM Hospital. The programme also featured the Florence Nightingale pledge ceremony and a cake-cutting celebration to mark International Nurses Day.
