Bhubaneswar, July 20: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Yellow Warnings for several districts of Odisha over the next five days, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds under the influence of active monsoon conditions. The weather department has urged people to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, particularly in coastal and northern Odisha.
According to the IMD, July 21 is expected to witness heavy rainfall at one or two places in Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph are also likely in several districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.
On July 22, heavy rainfall is likely in Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, while thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are expected across parts of the coastal belt, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Puri and Ganjam.
For July 23, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, along with thunderstorms in several adjoining districts. Similar thunderstorm activity is expected on July 24 in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
On July 25, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely to affect Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur.
The IMD has advised residents to closely monitor weather updates, avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms, stay away from waterlogged areas and vulnerable structures, and follow traffic advisories before travelling. Authorities have also cautioned that localized flooding, reduced visibility and temporary disruption of transport services may occur in areas experiencing intense rainfall.
