Bhubaneswar, Sep 29: A fresh allegation of ragging has surfaced at Ravenshaw University, with a second-year undergraduate student of Jagannath Hostel alleging mental and physical harassment by a group of third-year students following a dispute over an online mobile game.
According to the complaint submitted by the student, the incident occurred after he objected to what he alleged was the use of unfair means by some senior students while playing the game. His objection reportedly led to an altercation between the students.
The second-year student alleged that following the argument, the senior students called him near their hostel room, where he was allegedly subjected to mental and physical harassment. The student later approached the university’s Anti-Ragging Cell and submitted a formal complaint seeking intervention in the matter.
He also reportedly emailed the university Registrar and Chief Warden, requesting them to look into the allegations and take appropriate action against those allegedly involved.
The exact nature and extent of the alleged physical and mental harassment were not immediately known. The allegations are yet to be independently verified, and the identities of the students allegedly involved have not been disclosed.
The complaint has brought the issue of student safety and prevention of ragging in university hostels into focus. Universities are required to maintain mechanisms for receiving and examining complaints related to ragging and student safety.
The university authorities are expected to examine the complaint and take further action based on their findings. Any disciplinary or other measures, if initiated, will depend on the outcome of the inquiry.
