Bhubaneswar, June 25: In a significant political development in Odisha, former IAS officer Sujata Rout Karthikeyan formally joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Thursday, marking her entry into active politics and generating considerable interest across the state’s political landscape.
The formal induction ceremony was held at Sankha Bhawan, the BJD headquarters in Bhubaneswar, in the presence of party president and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Several senior party leaders, including former ministers, MPs, MLAs and organizational functionaries, attended the event.
Welcoming Sujata Karthikeyan into the party, Naveen Patnaik officially announced her induction and expressed confidence in her ability to contribute to public service through politics. Sources within the party indicated that the decision to induct her was taken directly by the BJD supremo, bringing an end to weeks of speculation regarding her future role after her resignation from the Indian Administrative Service earlier this year.
A 2000-batch IAS officer, Sujata Karthikeyan held several key positions during her administrative career and was known for her work in social welfare and women-centric programmes. Her transition from bureaucracy to politics is being closely watched by political observers.
Her entry has drawn additional attention because she is the wife of former bureaucrat-turned-politician V. K. Pandian, who played a prominent role in the BJD government during its later years.
Political analysts believe her administrative experience and governance background could strengthen the party’s outreach efforts. The development comes at a crucial time as the BJD seeks to reorganize and regain political momentum following its defeat in the 2024 Assembly elections. Many within the party see her induction as part of a broader strategy to bring experienced professionals into active politics and strengthen the organization for future electoral challenges.
