Bhubaneswar, May 8: Director General of Police YB Khurania along with Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena on Friday visited the Bhingarapur area under Balianta police limits to review the situation following the mob lynching incident that claimed the life of a young man.
According to reports, the senior officers inspected the crime scene and assessed the ground situation along with local police officials. The visit comes amid rising tension in the area after the shocking incident that occurred on Thursday afternoon.
Speaking to mediapersons after the inspection, DGP Khurania described the incident as unfortunate and assured that strict action would be taken following a detailed investigation. “We have come to assess the situation on the ground. The Commissionerate Police will take exemplary action after a thorough probe. So far, five persons have been arrested and more arrests will follow as the investigation progresses,” he said.
The incident reportedly took place after two youths were accused by two women of attempting sexual assault following a motorcycle collision. Soon after the allegations surfaced, locals allegedly assaulted the duo. One of them, Soumya Ranjan Swain (32), a Government Railway Police constable, died in the mob attack, while another youth, Om Prakash Rout, sustained critical injuries and is undergoing treatment.
Police are examining CCTV footage and viral videos to identify more persons involved in the lynching. Authorities indicated that additional arrests are likely in the coming days as the investigation continues.
