Odisha’s Hirakud Dam reopens to public after 24 days of high security
Bhubaneswar, June 3: Tourist access to the Hirakud Dam in Odisha's Sambalpur district was officially restored on Tuesday, ending a 24-day restriction imposed due to heightened national security concerns. The restriction, which began on May 9, was implemented in the wake of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor.
The Hirakud Dam, Asia’s longest earthen dam and a major tourist attraction, had been off-limits to visitors as part of a precautionary measure. Authorities cited the need for increased vigilance and security around critical infrastructure during the sensitive period.
During the lockdown, the Sambalpur district administration, in coordination with state and central security agencies, enforced a high-alert security protocol. Security personnel equipped with advanced arms and surveillance systems were stationed at key points across the dam site. Barricades were erected at all entry points, and local police were deployed to prevent unauthorized access.
Sambalpur Collector Siddheshwar Baliram Bondar had stated that the decision to restrict access was made in the interest of public safety and national security. With the situation now under control, the administration has reopened the site, allowing tourists to once again enjoy the scenic and engineering marvel.
