Odisha govt lays foundation for ₹10-crore silver filigree centre in Cuttack

Bhubaneswar, Aug 5: In a major initiative to preserve and promote Odisha’s world-renowned silver filigree craft, known as Tarakasi, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art Common Facility Centre (CFC) at the Cuttack Development Authority (CDA) premises.

The project, estimated to cost ₹10 crore, aims to empower local artisans, modernize production techniques, and elevate the centuries-old craft to international prominence.

Speaking at the ceremony, Parida said that Cuttack’s Tarakasi work has already earned global admiration for its intricate artistry. “This initiative is a step forward in showcasing Odisha’s heritage to the world. The centre will not only preserve the traditional essence of Tarakasi but also transform it into a tourist attraction,” she added. She proudly recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appreciation of Cuttack’s silver filigree during his foreign visit, calling it a proud moment for the state.

The upcoming CFC will offer artisans access to advanced tools, modern training programs, and design support. It will serve as a central hub to boost production, encourage innovation, and ensure that traditional skills are passed on to the next generation, while aligning with contemporary market demands.
