Odisha dolphin census records 710 individuals, indicating positive conservation efforts
Bhubaneswar, March 12: The latest dolphin census in Odisha has recorded an encouraging rise in dolphin numbers across different wildlife divisions, highlighting successful conservation initiatives.
According to the survey, a total of 710 dolphins were documented in the state, reflecting a thriving marine ecosystem. Among the species, the Humpback Dolphin was the most numerous, with 498 individuals, followed by the Irrawaddy Dolphin, which accounted for 188. Additionally, the census recorded 16 bottlenose dolphins and 8 spinner dolphins.
The Rajnagar forest division emerged as the prime habitat, reporting the highest count of 505 dolphins. Chilika Lake followed with 174, while smaller populations were observed in Berhampur (13), Puri (7), Balasore (7), and Bhadrak (4). Wildlife experts and environmentalists have welcomed the findings, stating that the growth in numbers signifies improved marine health and effective conservation policies.
Despite the promising figures, experts emphasize the importance of sustained protection measures. They urge the state government to implement stricter regulations against habitat destruction and ensure enhanced efforts to preserve Odisha’s rich marine biodiversity for future generations.
