Cyclonic circulation over Malacca Strait likely to intensify; Odisha braces for widespread rainfall
Bhubaneswar, Nov 20: A cyclonic circulation has developed over the central Malacca Strait, extending up to 5.8 km above sea level, raising concerns about possible weather disturbances in the Bay of Bengal. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this system may soon give rise to a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal around November 22. The system is further expected to intensify into a depression by November 24 as it moves in a west-northwest direction.
Weather scientist Uma Shankar Das shared detailed information about the formation on social media platform X. He noted that the circulation is showing consistent strengthening and is likely to advance into the southwest Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours. His update emphasizes the need for close monitoring, as the system may continue intensifying as it travels across warm sea waters.
Under the influence of this developing weather system, Odisha is expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall for four consecutive days. Coastal and southern districts are likely to be the most affected, with rain predicted in several parts of the state until November 25. Authorities have urged residents to stay alert for weather advisories as conditions may change rapidly.
