Bhubaneswar, July 10: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning for several districts of Odisha till July 17, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty surface winds and isolated heavy rainfall over different parts of the State. The weather office has advised residents, farmers and local administrations to remain alert and take necessary precautions during the forecast period.
According to the IMD, on July 11, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Koraput districts.
The weather pattern is expected to remain largely unchanged on July 12 and 13, with Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph at isolated places.
On July 14, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds over Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, along with heavy rainfall at isolated locations in the two districts. Similar conditions are expected to continue on July 15, when Sundargarh and Koraput will also likely witness thunderstorm activity, while heavy rain is expected in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
From July 16, the focus of the weather system is expected to shift towards rainfall. Heavy showers are likely at isolated places in Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, while Bargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj are expected to receive heavy rainfall on July 17.
The IMD has advised people to avoid open fields during thunderstorms, refrain from taking shelter under trees, and stay updated with official weather bulletins. Farmers, fishermen and those working outdoors have also been urged to exercise caution as lightning, gusty winds and heavy rain may disrupt normal activities and cause localised damage.
